Straight talk about failing resolutions

The New Year is upon us and if you are dragging yourself out of bed and wondering what’s going to be best to cure your hangover, then you probably aren’t thinking too far ahead of the moment that you are in.  Hopefully, you thought ahead a few days (or weeks ago) though…and put some decision making power into what is going to be ahead for you personally in 2011.

Every year we waste our time coming up with resolutions--I can personally attest to this now because my Zumba class is going to be filled with New Year’s flunkies for the next 8 weeks or so until they all get tired and quit.  As long as there’s a spot for me, I don’t care…no matter if you have promised yourself the classics…lose weight and quit smoking, or if you have something bigger on your mind I honestly hope you make it. Because truthfully, most people don’t. I’m not trying to be a downer--I think of myself more as a realist.  So let’s be real for a minute.

Smoking is slowly killing you. And you know it. Even the social smoker will soon see the effects and the Surgeon General has been all over the topic lately. Even one cigarette puffed on at just the right time can take your life. Every year millions of people across the country vow to kick their habit and they try everything.  For some people it works out well, but for the vast majority the struggle to stop is a serious uphill climb.  The truth is though, if you want to quit you can.  No doubt nicotine addiction is one of the most binding addictions there is.  If you think that your life will never function normally again when you decide to quit, think again.

Smoking brainwashes many people into thinking that they have to smoke in order to function--and while you are addicted this is certainly true.  But it doesn’t have to be this way. Find support and make the decision. Use whatever means of gum, patch, hypnosis or alternative method you can find to make it easier. Cold turkey cessation results in failure over 90% of the time. For the 10% who can kick it cold turkey, they must have a heart (and a resolve) made of stone--I commend you.  For the rest of the population decide. And stick to your decision.  My mama always said “people do what they want to do--no matter what they say.” So what do you want to do, and if you feel so inclined, post it here in a comment for us to all see…
