Resolutions 2012: Quitting Smoking

Across the world, people are busily making plans for New Years Eve celebrations. For many, that night is a night to say goodbye to a year filled with successes, challenges, and difficulties. It is also a clean slate for a new year where the world is their own.According to US studies, 40 to 45 percent of adults make resolutions each year. The most popular of those resolutions are to lose weight, get fit, drink less, manage debt, save money, get a better education, get a better job, take a trip, manage stress, volunteer to help others, and quit smoking. Statistically, 25 percent of these resolutions will come to an end within the first week. Within 6 months, 50 percent of the resolutions made will fall by the way side. That doesn't make the success rate of achieving one's resolutions high.

As I scanned news articles about cigarettes yesterday evening, I came across multiple that discussed poor choices. Bad behavior, arrests, evading taxes were among the articles I read. Are cigarettes really that bad?Amazing Race contestant Chris Pselletes apparently became angered during filming, losing his temper. Fellow contestant Dave Miller came to Chris' defense saying there were unique pressures of the race including quitting smoking. Have you noticed how some people are always smiling, no matter what disaster might be unfolding around them? Or perhaps you have been annoyed by the neighbor who always mentions the silver lining on a rain cloud of life. No matter your thoughts on positive people, a study conducted in the UK based on the New Zealand model showed that smokers who received positive text messages on their phones actually had a higher success rate in quitting smoking.The study was comprised of 5,800 smokers who were randomly placed into one of two groups; a txt2stop motivational group or the control group. The txt2stop group received motivational text messages sent to their phones five times per day for the first five weeks and three times per week for the next six months in the study. Continue Reading
