  • Smoking Men: You Might Lower the Risk of Joint-Replacement Surgery

    According to a study published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, those who had smoked for 48 years or more had a 42 percent to 51 percent lower risk of total knee or hip replacement than men who had never smoked. Age was an important factor as well as body weight and physical exercise.

    For smokers with nearly five decades of smoking behind them, the risk of death was higher in heavier smokers, but did not change the association found; as reported in the Journal.

    “More research is needed to better understand the role of smoking in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis,” researchers wrote. George Mnatzaganian, a doctorial student at the University of Adelaide in Australia, along with colleagues researched and wrote the study. Continue Reading
