The World Health Organization reports 100 million lives were claimed by tobacco consumption in the 20th Century. The 21 Century could claim 1 billion.

The World Health Organization released their 369 page study called “The Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic in 2008.” In this report, they calculated that by the end of the century, tobacco will have been responsible for taking the lives of one billion people. This is an impending tragedy if the current trends of the rate of tobacco consumption continue on the same path. In the 20th Century, 100 million lives were claimed for tobacco’s sake.

Currently, 5.4 million people die each year from illnesses directly linked to tobacco use such as lung cancer and heart disease. That is one life every six seconds. The study states that as soon as 2030 we could see that number jump from 5.4 to 8 million people a year. An additional sobering fact is that 80% of those deaths will be in developing worlds, where tobacco use is growing most rapidly.
With the effects of smoking being so dire, why is it that the number of tobacco consumers continues to rise? Do citizens have a death wish? Do they enjoy the time spent ill, watching their money deplete as it is siphoned off into medications and hospital bills? The problem with getting people to quit smoking or to not light up in the first place, is the same as it is with most other public health problems, lack of education.

In another study, conducted by the Chinese government, only 25% of the entire population of China knew that tobacco use was not good for their health. Big tobacco is quick to exploit weaknesses, especially when it comes to the population not being fully aware of the hazards of their products. This is scary to think, especially when taken into consideration the fact that China alone contains nearly 30% of the world’s smokers.

To date, this is the most comprehensive study of its kind at a global level says General Dr. Margaret Chan. Chan is Director of the World Health Organization. She is hoping that the data they collected will better arm these developing countries so they can begin their battle on tobacco and start putting an end to the senseless casualties.

Propylene Glycol (PG) may be in things you use every day already. Electronic cigarettes include this single ingredient to effectively deliver nicotine.

Propylene glycol is a chemical that has been relatively unheard of until recently. Interest in the chemical has been on the rise lately because it is one of the main ingredients that many companies are putting in their electronic cigarettes.
But if an ingredient is deemed by many to be dangerous, then why would it be added to a product that is supposed to be safe for you to use?

First, you must understand how an electronic cigarette works. Electronic cigarettes look like real cigarettes, but you inhale a vapor instead of smoke. This vaporized nicotine is so you get your nicotine fix without all the added chemicals and cancer causing agents such as carbon monoxide.

Propylene glycol is a key ingredient because it’s used to dilute the nicotine and help it to vaporize, thus making it inhalable.

Because it is being used in a new revolutionary product, many rumors have begun to fly around about it. Some claim it causes cancer while others say it is used in antifreeze. First of all, ethylene glycol is used in antifreeze, not propylene glycol. Secondly, there is absolutely no documented research supporting the fact that it causes cancer. Furthermore, it is not doctors, scientists, researchers, or even nutritionists making the cancer claim.

Although not many people have heard of this chemical, it can actually be found in many products used in most households. You may be using it every day already. Here’s a short list of some of the most common examples:

• Cake mixes
• Salad dressings
• Soft drinks
• Popcorn
• Food colorings
• Fat free Ice Cream
• Sour cream
• Lotions
• Creams
• Baby Wipes
• Shampoos
• Antiperspirants
• Cosmetics
• Lipstick
• Lubricants
• Room Deodorizers

Although electronic cigarettes are still new to the market, propylene glycol is not. With that aside, even with the chemical unapproved by the FDA (as an inhalant), traditional cigarettes still contain over four thousand chemicals in its 500+ ingredients. With that in mind, it seems almost anything you could inhale would be safer than a cigarette.

Aside from the obvious health risks smoking poses, the risk of fire related death or injury is surprisingly high. Here we briefly examine one study from 1998.

The National Fire Protection Association informs us that the top cause of death to civilians by fire is a result of items used for smoking. For example, matches and cigarettes that are either not disposed of properly or just flat out forgotten. Also, tossing a match into the yard or leaving a cigarette to burn while one falls asleep.

More than 900 lives were claimed in fires caused by these materials in 1998. Another 2,500 people were injured senselessly for the same reason. The cost for the combined property damage was $411.7 million. Fires can spread very quickly and become uncontrollable faster than you can say “Bob’s your uncle”. Many people do not quite realize all of the dangers smoking causes, which reach beyond the typical plea of damage to your lungs and second-hand smoke.

Thirty percent of victims of smoking material-related fires were responsible in the ignition of the flames. A fairly small percentage when one takes into account that two percent fewer (twenty-eight percent) were simply in the same room and not responsible for starting the fire.

The most daunting number is those that were hardly even in the direct vicinity of the beginning of the fire. Forty percent of the victims were in the same building somewhere or on the same floor. That means that of those 900 people whose lives were taken due to the fire, 360 of them probably did not even know that someone was smoking in the building.

Another unfortunate truth for many smokers is that it seems to go hand in hand with alcohol consumption. Even non-smokers seem to be drawn to cigarettes when drinking. The problem with this is that intoxicated people tend to become careless and forgetful of their smoking materials. More often than not this is a result of just misplacing lighters, but the occasional lit cigarette is forgotten also, causing flames to spark on whatever item the cigarette is near.

An issue that many don’t even think about happens when someone smokes indoors when they’re not supposed to. This will tend to require the wrong-doer to disable the smoke detector in one way or another, frequently just covering it up with a cloth or sometimes even removing the batteries altogether. The smoke detector won’t be able to carry out its single purpose, to detect smoke in case of a fire and save lives.

The benefits of electronic cigarette smoking are many, but by far the greatest is the absence of flammable combustion taking place. The flame is what turns your tobacco into a chemical factory, and puts your surroundings at risk when careless. Also, electronic cigarettes like The Safe Cig are safe to use indoors, leave no odor, and do not effect fire alarms.

The safer smoking alternative is here, ready to protect more than just your health.

We see warnings on nearly everything we consume these days. We're used to seeing them. But there's something different about the warning on cigarettes.

There is no "May" - Smoking definitely causes cancer.

It almost seems as though everything can cause cancer, illness, or negative effects, no matter how beneficial the product is. From antibiotics and their stomach irritation warnings, to carbonated beverages and their likelihood of gastrointestinal effects, everything has its risk.

I take my chances with carbonation. I love a nice glass of diet soda in the afternoon with my lunch. It “may” cause me to have a little belching problem later in the day, but there are no guarantees. I’ve gotten away with no gastro effects, while other days I’m like a hot-air balloon ready to burst at any moment.

I also take my chances with watching television for extended periods of time, even though there’s a risk of eye damage. I live on the edge. We all do in one way or another.

This weekend, I was sitting at my mother’s kitchen table, and there was her pack of cigarettes on the table. I picked up the box wrapped in cellophane and read the side of the package:

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, And May Complicate Pregnancy.

There’s no “may”, “can”, or “in some cases” in there. It’s a proven fact that smoking causes cancer. Now, if we could only get people to pay attention, understand, or care enough to quit. Or at least look at safer smoking alternatives.

Are we so desensitized to the dangers of cigarettes that we think this is funny? A teenage mother gave her baby a cigarette and shared it on Facebook.

Mother posts photo of her son smoking a cigarette on Facebook

Teenage pregnancy has always been an issue that affects the country. It is not uncommon to hear the argument “Babies can’t raise babies.” This seems to be blatantly true in the situation with teenage mother, Rebecca Davey, 18.

Rebecca posted a photo of her son, Ollie, “smoking” an unlit cigarette on her Facebook page. After someone reported the photo, Rebecca responded publicly on her page with: “Some w***** reported me to the police abwt picture off ollie.”

She went on to say later: “Why Would SomeOne Do That To Me U Ollie No was taking U Yur Mine for lyfee Darlinggg Mummy Loves You :)”

Along with judgment, the spell check option is not something that Rebecca frequents.

3 years ago, the photo sharing website, Flickr had a similar issue with an outburst of photographs of children smoking, sometimes lit cigarettes. Flicker administrators got right on this situation and deleted these photos as soon as they were made public.

The photo of Rebecca’s son Ollie was also removed, and police are continuing to investigate the well-being of the baby.

I really have nothing witty to end this post off with. Holy crap.

The Surgeon General is now up to four warnings that they require to be cycled through on tobacco cigarette packages. Electric cigarettes still at zero.

There are 4 warnings required to be on cigarette packages.

I was watching some late night television this weekend, and saw a few infomercials. As they transitioned from the sale of the product to the bright blue screen with the phone number and ordering details, I noticed that the shipping and handling price was shown. Typically I find these commercials to be unbelievable in the sense that they claim low prices, but they get you in shipping. Of course, you don’t find out about the shipping cost until you call in.

Convenient.

I was very happy, needless to say that they had begun telling consumers what they were getting into. Before they had the chance to get suckered into a situation in which they felt they “had” to buy, or try a product, they were told all of the fine print up front. Brilliant!

I’ve been learning about cigarettes for years. Since I was in grade school, we knew that “smoking was bad.” I don’t remember the first time I picked up a package of cigarettes, and I don’t remember what it said on the side. Many people have lost faith in the FDA and the Surgeon General since the number of active smokers in the US never goes down.

Awareness is surely key. Not many people take the time to read their cigarette packages, but if they did, they would notice that there is one of 4 Surgeon General Warnings on the labels. The SG is required to cycle the 4 messages on their cigarette packages:

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, And May Complicate Pregnancy.

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Quitting Smoking Now Greatly Reduces Serious Risks to Your Health.

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Smoking By Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury, Premature Birth, And Low Birth Weight.

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Cigarette Smoke Contains Carbon Monoxide.

So, the awareness is there. Are people not noticing it? Do they not care? Do they not know that there are safer, less expensive alternatives that still allow you to get the sensation of smoking, without all of the dangers and risks?

Whatever it is, the word needs to get out there. There’s only so much the Surgeon General can do - the rest ends up being up to us.

Last month, Judge Richard Leon ruled against FDA regulation over the electronic cigarette industry. It had come to a point recently where shipments of electronic cigarettes to the United States were held up by the Food And Drug Administration and their disapproval of the sale of the device. Distributors were left empty handed and consumers were missing out on the one-of-a-kind opportunity to quit smoking by still smoking, only without the hundreds of toxins and exhaled second hand smoke.

Now that the decision has been made, and the government must rethink its approach to the e-cigarette industry, it appears as though sales are going up, and show no signs of slowing. People are feeling confident now that they know the government will have a more difficult time coming between them and their chosen method of eliminating tar and many other harmful things from their smoking device. Several electronic cigarette distributors have reported significant increases in online sales and inquiries.

Could it be that finally, the electronic cigarette will be known commonly as the next big (safe) thing?

What do you think?

It’s no big surprise that after you have that successful job interview, you are sent to the nearest lab to have a blood and drug test. Employers aren’t too big on having employees who do illegal drugs, and rightfully so. As of February 1st, applicants to a Tennessee Health System will have another test to worry about - a nicotine test.

Since the 1st of this month, Memorial Health Systems began testing their potential job applicants for drugs and nicotine. Any applicant who tests positive for tobacco use will not be considered for hire. The Hospital already has the new regulation on their website. They also explain that they are dedicated to the safety and healthy lifestyles of both their employees and patients.

Could this decision be the beginning of a new trend? If the idea catches on, there is sure to be a great deal of controversy. One thing is for certain, no one will be taking smoke breaks at Memorial Health Systems and its affiliate locations.

Of course, since the electronic cigarette contains nicotine (optionally), it is not exempt from this screening process. It has not yet been considered whether or not nicotine-free e-cig cartridges will be allowed for use on breaks.

Is this unfair discrimination, or do you think they are justified in their actions? Let us know in the comments section below!

We know cigarettes do damage to our bodies, but there's nothing like a good refresher to scare the pants off of us every now and again.

From the time we’re in elementary school, the idea that “Cigarettes are bad” is implanted in our minds. When I was going to school, the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) class I had even featured a tiger mascot who would sing a rap song about cigarettes;

“Cigarettes are bad, bad, b-b-ad for you.”

I suppose the idea of making that song stick with us throughout life worked. One thing that did not stick with me is perhaps the most important part of education; the WHY. Why is smoking bad for you?

It’s time for a quick lesson, or what might be a refresher course for some of us. What is it about cigarettes that are so bad for us? Of course, there’s the fact that just under 600 ingredients are packed into each little filter. But what about taking a step beyond this? How do all of these ingredients in our stress-reducing, hunger curbing friend end up being our worst enemy?

The truth of the matter is that cigarettes affect almost every part of our bodies negatively, even if it feels good in the moment. Less than 10 seconds after inhaling, nicotine reaches the brain and stimulates the “feel good” parts just as heroin does. Just as with other addictive drugs, your body builds up a tolerance to the nicotine, and you begin to need more and more to achieve the desired effect. When you realize the damage you’re doing to your body, and decide to quit, the withdrawal symptoms of headache, nausea, and restlessness are often enough to get you to just give back in and smoke again.

Your stomach doesn’t enjoy the cigarette smoke. It can cause irritation and inflammation in the intestines and stomach. Stomach ulcers are very common in cigarette smokers due to the inflammation of stomach tissue.

These damages are the “minor” ones. The most damaged organs due to cigarette smoking are the lungs and heart. Smoking limits the amount of oxygen that is fueled to the brain. The air sacs in your lungs are damaged the very second smoke hits them. Many lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema can be attributed mostly to smoking. Also damaged are blood vessels. Your blood also gets thicker and harder to pump, causing the heart to beat more rapidly. Because of this, smoking can lead to heart disease and stokes.

This is just a brief overview of the major damages that smoking causes. This is not to mention the effects to the circulatory, reproductive and nervous systems. There is the harmful and deadly second-hand smoke emitted that causes over 53,000 deaths in non-smokers every year.

Every time you pick up a cigarette remember what it’s doing to every part of your body externally and internally. Think of the damage you’re causing to yourself and others. There’s a way out of the sick cycle of smoking, quitting, smoking again, quitting again, smoking again. You just have to be willing to help yourself and be open to finding a method that works for you.
