  • From the Archives: What Will It Take To Get You To Quit

Posted on January 25, 2012 by Mysti Reutlinger

We had a guest post submitted and published on our blog a little over two years ago. This post is still relevant today and is being shared again.

For most people, Mom’s house is the place you go for a retreat. It’s the one place that feels different than anywhere else, and where you go to relive memories. When you leave Mom’s house, you leave with a heart full of love, head full of memories, and arms filled with bags of food. For me, I end up leaving my mother’s house with one extra not-so-appreciated gift – clothes reeking of smoke. Continue Reading

  • What Prompted You to Try an Electronic Cigarette Part VI

Posted on January 21, 2012 by Mysti Reutlinger

Electronic CigarettesContinuing our series of entries received in our contest, What Prompted You to Try an Electronic Cigarette.

    Entry 13 from Steve

I started smoking when I was 17...way back in the 1960's. After I was married and had twin boys, I finally quit in 1989.  For reasons I still don't understand, I started again in 2007 and soon was up to nearly two pack per day. This was especially stupid because in 1999, I had a triple bypass and artificial heart valve installed.  My internist and cardiologist told me recently I HAD to quit. Smoking was not an option if I wanted to live.  The toxins in the smoke were causing me early COPD and chronic bronchitis, atrial fibrillation, and the carbon monoxide in smoke was damaging things by reducing the oxygen my heart was getting. First I tried the gum...no dice. It caused stomach problems and esophogeal reflux. Next was the patch.  That might as well have been pieces of tape for all the good it did.   Then my son showed me his ecig.  It looked like a promising thing, but looked like a hassle. There was a button you had to push and hold to heat it up and it had to be just right. There were three pieces.  A battery, atomizer and cartridge that you put liquid in.  I saw how he had to boil one thing clean, put drops in the cartridge that would sometimes then make liquid come out into your mouth and I wondered how on earth you could control the nicotine content. Entry 6 from Emma

I lay there staring at the ceiling. Yet another night of restless sleep, horrifically vivid nightmares that forced to me wake with a start, covered in sweat, nauseous and heart racing. It was day three of yet another attempt to quit smoking, and I’d slapped that patch on and hoped for the best. Whilst I hadn’t smoked, the side effects of the patch were really starting to take their toll on me. Three days later, hollow eyed and exhausted, I caved in and smoked. I needed something that wouldn’t feel like I was missing out. What I really wanted to do was carry on ‘smoking’. Surely there was another way? Continue Reading

I wanted desperately to quit smoking cigarettes without giving up the pleasures associated with smoking. I tried another brand of electronic cig and YUCK! Then I started researching. I tried the Safe Cig after checking the company out and was pleasantly surprised. Continue Reading

  • Resolutions 2012: Quitting Smoking

Posted on December 29, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

Across the world, people are busily making plans for New Years Eve celebrations. For many, that night is a night to say goodbye to a year filled with successes, challenges, and difficulties. It is also a clean slate for a new year where the world is their own.

According to US studies, 40 to 45 percent of adults make resolutions each year. The most popular of those resolutions are to lose weight, get fit, drink less, manage debt, save money, get a better education, get a better job, take a trip, manage stress, volunteer to help others, and quit smoking. Statistically, 25 percent of these resolutions will come to an end within the first week. Within 6 months, 50 percent of the resolutions made will fall by the way side. That doesn't make the success rate of achieving one's resolutions high.

Albert Einstein has been accredited with, "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

You can find success in all of your resolutions, including your commitment to quit smoking. Continue Reading

  • Nebraska Students Honored in Anti-Smoking Contest

Posted on November 28, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

Nebraska students were asked to participate in creating posters in conjunction with an Alcoholism and Addictions education unit. The theme of the posters was, "If You Smoke, We All Smoke!" Nine students (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each school-group) were honored in a small ceremony on Thursday, November 17 at the Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Addiction in Grand Island.

The first place submissions (one from elementary school, middle school, and high school) will be turned into billboards with the assistance of Lamar Advertising. The winners were selected out of 239 entries; more than entries submitted in the last two years combined.

Tim Zeleski, a former smoker and project coordinator for Tobacco Free Hall County, said the ceremony was held on Thursday to coincide with the Great American Smokeout.

Zeleski shared his own quitting experiences with The Grand Island Independent: Continue Reading
