  • What Are Combustion Byproducts?

Posted on November 10, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

Cigarette Combustion ByproductsAt The Safe Cig and with many other electronic cigarette companies, the term combustion byproducts is often used. Understanding what that term means in relation to cigarettes will further enhance your knowledge of eCigarettes and what is being eliminated.

Combustion byproducts are the secondary chemicals created through the process of burning any substance. In cigarettes, the combustion process is responsible for the chemical reaction that changes nicotine containing tobacco and cigarette paper into smoke with over 4,000 toxic chemicals. Included in that figure are a minimum of 40 known carcinogens (cancer causing agents) with some reports claiming as many as 70 carcinogens.  Continue Reading

  • Where Can I Use my Electronic Cigarette?

Posted on November 8, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

One client was able to vape in the hospital!Electronic cigarettes are changing the smoking industry. Cigarette bans stretch far and wide across the world. Some bans are much more extensive and even prohibit smoking in apartments and other multi-family housing units. Knowing where you can use your electronic cigarette and some tips on educating others about the system will assist in ensuring that eCigarettes continue to be allowed where bans prohibit traditional tobacco cigarettes, also called analogs.

In September, one of our clients had to be admitted into the hospital for surgery. He knew that he would be facing multiple weeks in the hospital and would not be allowed to step outside for a cigarette. Prior to admission for his surgery, he popped onto our Facebook page and asked if people were able to vape while in the hospital. We had received testimonials and photos from other clients who were afforded the privilege of vaping and we expressed that to this client. We reminded him that he needed to educate the staff about his electronic cigarette and ask for permission. Continue Reading

  • Smoking Causes Infant-Death

Posted on October 20, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

The worst fear a parent could face is losing a child.

Editorial Note: I believe it is in the best interest to bring forward this news story, albeit a very difficult one for me to address. I lost my first-born child in 2000 and delivered my youngest son at 24-weeks in 2008. I hope to convey the life-changing grief process amidst powerful statistics centered around this particular story - and the end of one life.

Every day children are born across the world. Those children are the dream of the future for parents and extended family alike. Protecting those children from anything that could harm them is what a parent does, without qualm. But what happens when a powerful addiction stands between your desire to protect your child and the clutch your addiction has upon you?

One New Zeland mom wrote on her Facebook wall May 11 that it was good to be home with her chubby-cheeked child who arrived prematurely. The coroner ruled that her son, known only as "Baby N", died due to sudden unexplainable infant death (SIDS) in June. However, he went on to state that exposure to tobacco smoke, sleeping in the same bed as his parents against medical advice, and his premature birth were likely contributing factors to his death. • Respiratory Care Week and Breathing Easy Testimonial Contest

Posted on October 18, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

Did you know that it is Lung Health and Respiratory Care week? True story!

We know how important the lungs are to a body functioning correctly. Without proper oxygenation, people are less able to fight off infection, including tuberculosis. The damage caused to the lungs by smoking stretches far beyond just lung cancer. In a study published recently in The FASEB Journal states that cigarettes effect the lungs in a similar manner as Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis disrupts the normal function of epithelial cells — cells that make up the sweat glands in the skin and that also line passageways inside the lungs, liver, pancreas, and digestive and reproductive systems. (1) The improper movement of salt and water in the epithelial cells lining the lungs causes a thick, sticky mucus to form. Bacteria and toxic chemicals become trapped in the mucus, leading to a host of problems including life-threatening infections and cancer. Continue Reading

  • 40 Million Smokers Could Die from Tuberculosis by 2050

Posted on October 15, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

In a study published in British Medical Journal (BMJ 2011; 343:d5506), it is projected that 40 million smokers could die from Tuberculosis (TB) by 2050.

Tuberculosis visible in chest x-rayTuberculosis is a bacterial infection that primarily infects the lungs, but can spread to other organs in the body. TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is contracted by breathing in the air droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person.

Smokers are twice as likely to contract tuberculosis and die from the infection than non-smokers. According to the study, many of the new TB cases anticipated before 2050 will be in Africa, eastern Mediterranean, and southeast Asian regions. In those areas of the world, there is a high populous and living conditions are not always sanitary. A high population in regions where medical care Continue Reading

  • Stub Out Cigarettes and Prevent Fires!

Posted on October 9, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

National Fire Prevention Week: "Protect Your Family from Fire."

While this week's focus is on protecting your family from fire, we feel it is important to educate our readers on the dangers cigarettes pose to family, friends, pets, and the environment. The National Fire Protection Association informs us that the top cause of death to civilians by fire is a result of items used for smoking; for example, matches and cigarettes that are either not disposed of properly or just flat out forgotten.

Sometimes, smokers fall asleep with a cigarette burning. The results are devastating. Often, the devastation faced includes complete property damage, immense medical treatment for those who were able to escape the fire, and funeral expenses for those who did not.

Smoking itself is a real-life threat. Tobacco cigarettes are not always stubbed out completely when a smoker intends for that to happen. The introduction of fire-safe cigarettes has not been enough to eliminate the serious fire risk that stems from Continue Reading

  • Be A Good Neighbor: Education and Respect

Posted on September 28, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

Most people are non-smokers. As a vaper it is important to educate those around you who might not fully understand the electronic cigarette. For those who are smoking traditional cigarettes, it is neighborly to respect those who do not smoke. In celebration of Good Neighbor Day, here are some suggestions to build friendship bridges in your community.

    Electronic Cigarette Education

Electronic cigarettes resemble cigarettes in appearance and behavior. Explaining the parts of your e-cig to your neighbor and how they function provides you the Continue Reading

  • Marital Status and Smoking are Factors in Hair Loss

Posted on September 25, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

Stub out cigarettes to keep your tresses beautiful.

Study author Dr. Bahman Guyuron, chairman of the department of plastic surgery at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine said

We can say that we identified factors that appear to both raise risk and lower risk, for both men and women, independent of genetic disposition.

Genetics aside, the next strongest predictor of midline (central) hair loss is marital status. Women who lose a spouse through divorce or death show increased thinning of hair than their married counterparts. Sharing responsibilities with a partner in life provides a stress-reduction. The transition into independence following marriage, coupled with the stress of grief taxes delicate hair follicles, causing locks to fall away and not return. Continue Reading

  • Smoker Discrimination Reaches Beyond Medical Professions

Posted on September 23, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

Predominately found in the medical field, smoking is not allowed by employees. Doctor's offices and hospitals across the country are openly stating they will not hire anyone who smokes. It is easy to understand their stance on the subject given they work with thousands of people every day who have allergic reactions to cigarette smoke, weakened lungs, and a host of other sensitivities to the toxins and carcinogens found in cigarettes. Unfortunately, discrimination against smokers isn't limited to just the medical field.

People across all professions are facing increasing resistance to tobacco use. Heather S., a hiring manager for a national staffing agency stated, "We have clients across all sectors that specifically request that we hire non-smokers. It is not our policy to Continue Reading

  • No More Smokes for You!

Posted on September 18, 2011 by Mysti Reutlinger

No monkey business about it. It's time to quit, by force, if necessary.

Orlando is one step closer to infringing on smoker's rights to light up outdoors with a ban aimed at prohibiting smoking in all of their parks. Mayor Buddy Dyer said he would support the ban that has now gained momentum with city commissioners approving a resolution last Monday.

The prior draft included sidewalks and any public plazas, similar to the ban that recently went into effect in New York. Those suggestions for inclusion were removed with some feeling as though the scope of the ban would be too broad, however, many residents of Orlando feel otherwise and would happily support banning smoking in those areas.
